Since a candidate is allowed to appear in only one of the 27 papers for which the GATE 2021 exam will be held, they have to carefully make a choice of the paper they wish to write.
A candidate is expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of his/her qualifying degree. However, he/she is free to choose any paper according to his/her admission plan, keeping in mind the GATE eligibility criteria of the institutions in which he/she wishes to seek admission. For more details regarding the admission criteria in any particular institute, the candidate is advised to refer to the websites of that institute.
GATE 2021 would contain different types of questions in various papers: Paper wise GATE 2020 Exam Pattern

GATE 2021 Cut Off:

The cut off is the minimum mark required to qualify the entrance exam. The candidates need to secure as same as the cut-off mark or more than that to be eligible for the counselling session. The cut off varies as per the different institutes, courses and the category of the candidate.
GATE cutoff 2021 - GATE cutoffs are the minimum marks that the test-takers need to score to be eligible for admission in the MTech, MSc & PhD courses offered at the GATE participating institutes. After the GATE results are announced, the conducting authority of the exam releases the qualifying cutoffs for all the GATE papers. However, the GATE participating institutes decide their admission cutoff for the selection of candidates.
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifying marks in their respective papers can participate in the counselling process conducted by CCMT for admission to IIITs, NITs, and CFTIs and COAPS for admission to IITs.
Besides admission to postgraduate programs in IITs, NITs, IISc and other engineering colleges in India, the GATE score is used by many Public Sector Undertakings for the recruitment of graduate engineers. Take a look at PSUs accepting GATE scores for recruitment.
GATE 2021 will be conducted by IIT Bombay in February 2021. The exam will be held for 25 papers with Biotechnology as the new entrant. The official notification along with GATE 2020 exam dates has been released by the institute.

Factors determining GATE cutoffs
GATE cutoff for each paper depends on numerous factors mentioned below:

  • Number of candidates taking that paper
  • The difficulty level of GATE question paper
  • Total number of available seats
  • Category under which the candidate is seeking admission
  • Difference between GATE qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff

Candidates need to understand the difference between qualifying cutoff and the admission cutoff for GATE. The qualifying cutoff is the institute eligibility cutoff while admission cutoff ensures a call for admission at IITs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs. Qualifying GATE cutoff is released by the conducting authority and available on GOAPS while admission cutoffs are released by the individual participating institute and available on their respective counselling portals-CCMT/ COAPS.

Qualifying Gate Cut off Admission Gate Cut off
Also referred to as eligibility cutoff or IITs, NIT, IIITs, and CFTIs, it is the minimum marks a candidate must score so that he/she is eligible for admission It is the final opening and closing ranks score fixed by the participating institutes for selection of candidates
Meeting the qualifying cutoff does not mean the candidate will be selected for admission Meeting the admission GATE cutoff does not mean that the candidate will be selected for admission.
The qualifying GATE cutoff is fixed before the announcement of GATE results The admission cutoff is fixed after the declaration of GATE results
The qualifying GATE cutoff is announced by the conducting IIT and available on GOAPS The admission cutoff is released by individual participating institutes and available on their respective counselling portal – CCMT/COAP

To begin with, aspirants were requested to visit - http://appsgate.iisc.ernet.in. It could also be accessed from the official website of the respective zonal GATE offices or the website of the GATE 2021 organising institute.

Note: The login to the GOAPS interface required a password created by candidates. So, aspirants were requested to keep their password information safe and not disclose it to anyone.
Registration: Aspirants needed to register for the exam by providing a valid email address, mobile number, and a GOAPS password. All communications regarding GATE will be sent to the email address provided at the time of registration. One person was allowed to register with one e-mail address. Candidates were also advised to give their mobile numbers for communications through SMS.
GOAPS Password: Aspirants had to choose a password during their registrations through GOAPS. This password must be remembered by the candidate along with the GOAPS Enrolment ID to login to GOAPS. Students were recommended to choose a password that's hard to guess (it should not be the candidate’s name, date of birth, or any easy to guess a string of numbers or letters like 12345 or abcd).
GOAPS Enrollment ID: Once aspirants register for GATE 2021, an email containing the GOAPS Enrolment ID will be sent to the candidates on the email id provided.
Step 2: Fill the online application form for GATE 2021
To fill the GATE 2021 application form online, candidates had to log in to the official website of GOAPS using their credentials. Once logged in, candidates were able to fill the application form for GATE.
The GOAPS website allowed aspirants to enter data, “Save” partially filled form, “Logout”, and resume the filling of the application form by logging in again. The GOAPS portal is self-explanatory and user-friendly. Aspirants could also avail online help about using GOAPS on its website.
Problems in Log-in to GOAPS – In case, aspirants forgot their user ID or password, they were required to follow the instructions on the GOPAS portal to retrieve them.

Step 3: Pay GATE 2021 application fee
After filling the online application form, candidates had to pay the GATE 2021 application fee. Details of application fee and various payment options are given below. Please remember that the application fee is non-refundable.

Online Net-Banking Payment Details:
  • On submitting the GATE 2021 filled-in application form, the website used to redirect to an online payment gateway page. Candidates had to choose the bank or mode of payment on this page after which they were redirected to the website of the bank of their choice.
  • Aspirants were required to pay the fee through net-banking or debit card or e-challan.
  • While trying to pay the fee, aspirants will be shown the fee amount and bank charges where they had to confirm that the payment is for GATE 2021.
  • After successful payment of the GATE 2021 application form, aspirants were redirected to the GATE online application website.
  • If a student came across any difficulty (due to internet connection or power failure, for example), and they were not sure whether the payment was processed or not, they were needed to login back to GOAPS and check the status of the payment. Students could also check the status with their bank.
  • In case the fee amount was debited from a student's bank account and GOAPS did not acknowledge any fee payment, then the money was credited back to the account within seven working days.
  • In such a case, one may initiate a fresh payment using GOAPS, even without waiting for the money to be credited back to the account so that your application was on time.
  • Once the payment was successful, a unique “Fee Payment Number” was generated that MUST be saved by the candidate as it will be used in the later stages when he/she fills up the GATE 2021 Application form.
Important: Candidate should fill in the details on the GOAPS website without any error because the application is liable to be rejected if there is any error. As a checklist, candidates MUST verify that they had filled in and uploaded the following as required:

The GATE exam is held in both single and multi-session for a few papers. This is because such papers have a large number of aspirants. Due to this, the conducting body has to use the process of normalisation to ensure unbiased results in multi-session GATE paper.
The process of normalisation in GATE is based on the assumption that the ability of candidates is equally distributed across all sections in a multi-session exam. It is the responsibility of the exam conducting body (IIT Bombay for GATE 2021) to ensure that the number of candidates in each session is of the same magnitude. The process of normalisations will be different for single and multi-session exams. The raw marks of a single session will be used to compute a candidate's GATE score whereas, the marks in the multi-session exam will be normalised and then used to compute the final GATE score.

GATE score for multi-session papers is normalised using the below formula
