The University Grants Commission (UGC) announced twenty-four universities as fake. These universities were unrecognized institutions and a maximum of them operated from Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. These universities do not comply with the UGC Act and they do not have the power to give degrees to the students.
Uttar Pradesh has eight fake universities and Delhi has seven fake universities, while Odisha and West Bengal have two each. There is one fake university in Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Puducherry, and Maharashtra.
