Every year, around 70 lakh students, successfully pass their 12th boards in India. For a large number of these students, government jobs are a chance at a secure life. There are several opportunities these aspirants can aim for. Whether it is in defence, railways, SSC, or banks, there are plenty of options at hand. In this article, we will take a look at the top competitive exams after 12th for getting government jobs.

Defence

The Indian Defence forces consist of the army, the navy, the air force, and the central police. Every year, the defence sector is one of the lead recruiters of candidates who have successfully passed their 12th board. Below is a list of competitive exams after 12th one may appear to land their dream defence job

NDA Entrance Exam 12th pass (any stream) Conducted in 2 phases
1. Offline test which has 2 parts of total 900 marks
  • Mathematics of 300 marks and test duration 2 ½ hours
  • General Ability of 600 marks and duration 2 ½ hours
2. Interview
  • Successful candidates join the National Defense Academy for 3 years
  • Army cadets go to Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Navy cadets to Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala, and Air Force to Indian Air Force Academy in Hyderabad
Indian Navy B. Tech Entry Scheme 12th pass (Science Stream)
Only for unmarried male candidates

Conducted in 3 phases –
1. 1st round of selection based on JEE Mains Score
2. Interview –

  • Stage I - Intelligence test, Picture Perception test, Group Discussion
  • Stage II - Psychological testing, Group testing, Interview

3. Medical test

  • Successful candidates are sent to Indian Naval Academy Ezhimala, Kerala based on All India Rank and Vacancies.
  • Streams taught – Applied Electronics & Communication Engineering (for Executive Branch), Mechanical Engineering (for Engineering Branch including Naval Architect specialization), Electronics & Communication Engineering (for Electrical Branch)
  • B. Tech degree awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University at the end of 4 years.
Indian Navy Sailors Recruitment Exam 10+2 pass with 60% or more aggregate in Maths and Physics and at least one of Chemistry, Biology or Computer Science 1. Computer-based all India examination conducted with basic 10+2 syllabus for English, General Knowledge, Science, and Mathematics.
2. This is followed by a fitness test and medical exam.
3. Selected candidates are recruited for either of the following –
  • Artificer Apprentices (AA)
  • Senior Secondary Recruit (SSR)
  • Matric Recruit (MR)
  • Non-Matric Recruit (NMR)
  • Musician
Indian Army Technical Entry Scheme 12th Pass with minimum 70% aggregate, and from Science Stream with Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics Conducted in 2 phases –
1. Computer-based written test in English, General Knowledge, Science, and Mathematics.
2. Shortlisted candidates from the written test are interviewed.
  • For Phase I pre-commissioning training, selected candidates go to Officers Training Academy, Gaya for 1 year and then to either College Of Military Engineering, Pune, or The Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, Mhow, or Military College Of Electronics And Mechanical Engineering, Secunderabad for 3 years.
  • For their Phase II post-commissioning training, they go to either College Of Military Engineering, Pune, or The Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, Mhow, or Military College Of Electronics And Mechanical Engineering, Secunderabad for 1 year.
Indian Air Force Airman in Group ‘Y’ 10+2 pass (any stream) 1. Candidates are initially shortlisted based on a written test conducted on Reasoning Abilities and General Awareness.
2. In the next phase, 2 adaptability tests are conducted –
  • Test 1 – to test the candidate’s adaptability to different geographic and terrain conditions.
  • Test 2 – to test the candidate’s adaptability to military lifestyle

 

Railway

Railways is another one of the larger recruiters of the Indian government. It is popular among aspirants as it comes with all central government perks.

Railway Clerks 10+2 (all streams)
  • Candidates are shortlisted based on 2 stages of computer-based tests. Both stages have varying degrees of questions from General Awareness (40 marks), Mathematics (30 marks), and General Intelligence and Reasoning (30 marks). Typing test is conducted for certain positions.
  • Successful candidates are posted across the region in railways stations, regional offices, etc.
Station Master    
 
10+2 (all streams)
  • Candidates are shortlisted based on 2 stages of computer-based tests. Both stages have varying degrees of questions from General Awareness (40 marks), Mathematics (30 marks), and General Intelligence and Reasoning (30 marks). Typing test is conducted for certain positions.
  • Successful candidates are posted across the region in railways stations, regional offices, etc.
Ticket Collector 10+2 (all streams)
  • This is an elaborate process with stages divided into a Written Test/Computer Based Test (CBT), a Psychological Test, a Physical Efficiency Test (PET), a Medical Test, Documents Verification, and a Personal Interview.
  • The first CBT has the following marks division – General Awareness (25), General Intelligence (5), Arithmetic (20), Technical Subjects (30), Reasoning (10), and General Science (30). 
  • Successful candidates are posted across the region.
Assistant Loco Pilot 10+2 (Science Stream)
  • This is an elaborate process with stages divided into 2 written computer-based tests.
  • Each CBT has the following divisions – Mathematics, General Intelligence & Logical Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering, and General Awareness on Current Affairs. 
  • The 2nd stage of CBT is further divided into 2 parts – Part A and Part B. Part B is where the engineering and related Physics skills are tested.
  • Successful candidates are posted across the region.
Railway Police Constable 10+2 (all streams)
  • This is an elaborate process with stages divided into a Written Test/Computer Based Test (CBT), a Psychological Test, a Physical Efficiency Test (PET), a Medical Test, Documents Verification, and a Personal Interview.
  • The first CBT has the following marks division – General Awareness (50), Arithmetic (35), and General Intelligence & Reasoning (35). 
  • Successful candidates are posted across the region.

  • Tier III – Skill test with typing speed and data entry accuracy being tested
Postings can be anywhere across India.
Stenographer 10+2 (any stream) Conducted in 2 stages –
  • Tier I – Computer-based test with syllabus covering English Language, General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness
  • Tier II – Skill test with typing speed and data entry accuracy being tested
Postings can be anywhere across India.

 

Banking

There are not many bank jobs available for 12th pass candidates. However, RBI does have an opportunity

  • Computer-based test with syllabus covering English Language, General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness
  • Language Proficiency Test for the location for which the candidate has applied

Postings are in metro cities with primary language same as the language in which the candidate took the language proficiency test.
