The term “Vocational” means a type of education and career, commonly known as career and technical education (CTE) and is generally offered at community colleges, career centers, technical schools and in some universities.
These courses make the students be career-ready in three aspects: academic skills, employability skills, and technical, career-specific skills. Vocational study and courses have the following characteristics:
  • A specific trade or field
  • Non-academic in-nature
  • Hands-on & practical activities
  • Need Apprenticeships or on-the-job training
  • Need a credential, certificate, or diploma
Vocational Courses deal with the industry-friendly skills that are provided to the candidates into the diverse fields and aim at preparing them for a dedicated career. These courses help on the advancement of the career as they are directly related to the corporate requirements.  There are the vocational courses which confirm that the specific candidate possesses the essential skills required in the particular profession

Few of the popular vocational courses in India are :


1. Audio Technicians/Electrical Technicians

One can opt for the certificate and the course over the audio engineering that imparts the knowledge on the technical side of the music and the broadcasting communications. These technicians are also in charge of the relevant equipment which records the music and the audio tracks. The job prospect is promising and many of the big and the small houses hire such skilled professionals.
An electrical technician maintains and repairs the electrical connections and fittings, installs and checks maintenance of the wiring, checks control over the lighting systems at homes, offices or factories. With the dependence over the electrical products, the demand for the technicians has risen for servicing and the maintenance. The job responsibilities here are repairing and up-gradation of the electronics equipment and the systems.

2. Game Designer

The Gaming Industry in India is rapidly growing and is expected to be a market of 1 billion people. The game designers design the video games and discover technical aspects that are needed into the designing of every single video game and have sound knowledge of the computer software which are used to design the new age advanced video games. In gaming, the popular streams are Animation, Computer Science, Graphic design, Multimedia design, Software engineering. To become a Designer you need to be proficient in 3D as well as 2D art. A bachelor's degree is required to enter the gaming industry.
The salary of a game designer depends on the job role he is performing. The average salary ranges from Rs. 3 lac p.a- Rs.8 lac p.a .

3. Foreign Language Expert

With businesses witnessing a boom all over the world, demands for the foreign language experts are seeing an all-time high. The primary job responsibility of the language expert is to communicate with foreign clients mostly about the company’s product range and the services. Some of the other requirements are needed in translation work, software development, foreign language tutoring and in the embassy of countries. The most demanding foreign languages in India are Chinese, Japanese, French and German. One can also join in a travel and tourism company as a tour guide.
Chinese is the highest paying foreign language in India that draws an average salary of Rs 8 Lac per annum- Rs 11 lac per annum depending on the job role. 

4. Commercial Pilot Training

This course is perfect for the launch pads of the commercial pilots and provides extensive experience in national and international pilot training. 

The duration of this training is mostly as the 12-18 months and the eligibility is 10+2 or it's equivalent with a minimum of 50% marks of the Mathematics and Physics. A fitness certificate from the designated medical practitioner will be necessary while for issuing of CPL License, Class I Medical would be necessary. Pilot Training comprises of two parts, the Ground Training, and the Flying Training. The Ground Training covers the theory subjects such as the Air Regulations, Aviation Meteorology, Air Navigation, Aircraft Technical Subjects and RTR(A). There is also an undergraduate course offering specialization in the aviation that the students can opt apart from vocational training. The salary varies from airline to airline and different factor. Below is the approximate average salary of a commercial pilot.

  • Junior First Officer — 1.25 Lakhs/m to 1.50 Lakhs/m
  • First Officer — 1.50 Lakhs/m to 2.00 Lakhs/m
  • Senior First Officer — 2.50 Lakhs/m to 3.50 Lakhs/m
  • Captain — 4.00 Lakhs/m to 5.50 Lakhs/m
  • Senior Captain — 6.00 Lakhs/m to 8 Lakhs/m

5. Air Hostess Training

In India, a number of private institutions provide a degree or a diploma and the Certificate in the Air Hostess training programs. Duration of these courses varies on the nature of the program. However, most of the times the Air Hostess training lasts between 1-2 years. This is one of the highly coveted jobs in the aviation sector, which offers a plethora of job opportunities. The average salary of an Air hostess fresher is INR 25,000 – INR 40,000 a month with lots of perks and allowances.


6. Event Management Courses

Another popular vocational course is getting a degree or the diploma into the event management field. A career in Event management require creativity and hard work. Event Management is a growing space with an estimated increase in expenditure of 20% every year. The duration of these relevant programs varies between the one to the three years depending upon the nature of the relevant course. A fresher in the event management may earn from INR 2 lacs p.a - INR 4 lacs p.a.

7. Diploma in Hospitality

The hospitality is also the fast-growing sector in India and the job opportunities are also enormous. The degree, diploma or the certificates here for the relevant programs in the Hospitality Management are in much demand. Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM) is the four years programs which are known for the best in one among all the Hospitality courses in the country. The average salary for a Hospitality Manager is 25,674 per month in India according to Indeed Research. Popular areas of work include restaurant and catering management, hotel and accommodation management, and conference and exhibition management, travel agencies, casinos, cruise companies, private clubs etc.


8. Digital Marketing

As the demand for online platforms is surging, so for Digital marketing. The scope of this subject is growing day by day, and many people are opting to become digital marketing professionals and trying their fate in the digital sector. Here one can choose any specialisation and can be offered job roles such as SEO expert, Social Media Manager, Social Media Expert, Content Developer, Content Marketing Manager, PPC expert, Email Marketer and many more. The average salary ranges from 1.5 lacs per annum - 3 lacs per annum for a fresher in India. Someone with 5-10 years of experience may earn Rs. 10 LPA - Rs. 30 LPA.


9. Animation, Graphics, and Multimedia

The course study over Animation and Multimedia can be of a great opportunity, where the creative bent of mind is the prerequisite for the relevant course. There are a number of institutions in the country who offer the 1-2 years of the diploma courses, whereas, the B.Sc and B.A courses offered in this sector are of the three-year duration. The animation is the method of creating the illusion of the motion by the rapid demonstration of the series of static images which are different from each other. Those who are captivated by the Narnia, Avatar, Ice Age, Wall-E, etc and have hands-on drawings and sketching can also think for the joining the course in the animation sector as the industry offers boundless scope. Also, the experts predict that in the next few years India would also employee thousands of 2D and the 3D animators. The salary of a fresher may vary from Rs 8k–12k per month. A well-experienced animator who has a good portfolio of excellent animation work could easily get Rs. 50,000-60,000 per month.

10. Fashion Designing

Bachelor of Design in Fashion Designing is a very prestigious four-year program offered by the NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology). The course is very popular among the students who are interested in the designing of the clothes and the apparels. The future career prospects are also here extremely good a the fashion and the industry is now seeing as a boom. The career scope which includes here is the designers, the freelance design consultants, the costume designers, the illustrators, etc. The graduates can also get here hired by the multinational companies and the companies in the clothing line and the designer wear for space. Salary of a fresher may vary from Rs. 15K - 35K / per month and someone with 5 years of experience can fetch 6 figure salary in India.  The salary,  however, varies from company to company and place to place.

11. Diploma in Banking and Finance

A career in the sector of banking and finance is the most gratifying sector as you can apply for many prestigious job roles such Provisional Officer and relationship manager/communication officer in banks, stockbroker, analyst, statistician, credit control manager, corporate banking executive, etc. In the public sector with this diploma, you can also start your career as a bank clerk. The salary varies for different job roles in public and private sectors that keeps changing.


12. Web Development and Designing

Private Institutes offer the diploma and also the certificates courses in web development and designing. The duration of these courses varies over the nature of the relevant program and can last from six months to two years. The sector is seeing unprecedented growth and MNCs, as well as the small companies, are hiring the new developers, and also launching one’s own web designing is also a great idea. The Average Web Developer Salary in India
is 2.75 to 3.5 lakhs per annum.

13. Photography

The career options of this course field lie in the field of photojournalism, Fashion and Advertising, Nature and the Wildlife, Travel or the Event Photography.  One can also start one's career as an assistant photographer or join website design agencies or work as a freelancer. Photojournalism is known to be an exciting job which requires the clicking of the news-worthy images. As per “India today” a photographer can earn Rs. 2 lakh- Rs. 3.5 lakh per year as starting salary

14. Beautician Course

The course of skincare and beauty is trending.  With more and more people getting concerned about their looks, the demand for the beauticians and the stylists is increasing. One can also go for specifications in the cosmetology, the hairstyling, aesthetics, manicure, pedicure or the electrolysis. Once the course is completed, the trained professional can also opt to work in a parlour or get hired in beauty and the skin-care company or can also set up their own Parlor. In India, a cosmetologist can earn Rs. 1.5 lakh to Rs. 2 Lakh per annum as a Fresher.

15. Catering Management

The catering which is the business of providing food service outdoor is also seeing tremendous growth. With numerous ceremonies all the year-round in a country like India, more and more catering service providers are coming into the picture. Even the corporate world opts the catering services for their formal events, the seminars, conferences, etc. Anyone who is passionate about joining the food sector can opt for this course. The average salary for a Catering Manager is  26,361 per month in India according to Indeed.
