Careers and Scope in Environmental Science

Environmental Science is a branch of study where one can find multiple ways to save the environment with the use of the resources at hand. After completing your studies in this field, a plethora of job opportunities opens up before you. One can easily work in private organizations, with government bodies, teach in schools, colleges or universities, and work in NGOs and so on. The jobs that open up before an individual give them ample scope to use their skills and further their careers. 
Read on to know about the sectors where you can work after completing your studies in environmental science.

Environmental scientists

They work towards maintaining the biodiversity, ecological balance, preserving natural resources and management of the wastelands. They are in demand as all industries have a department on environmental research and development. Their main aim is to look for ways of controlling pollution. 

Environmental consultant 

The job of an environmental consultant is to work on a contractual basis in public and private sector companies. They are engaged for addressing issues of the environment like air and water pollution, soil contamination and other issues. They have proper knowledge of technical and scientific things which enable them to conduct assessments of the environment. 

Environmental science manager

They work for different private companies. The environmental science manager is responsible for ensuring that the company comply with the laws of the country. The managers will help in designing the programs of the company. Environmental science manager, therefore, has an administrative and scientific role in the company. 

Environment Journalists

With global warming and other environmental hazards happening all over the world, the role of environment journalists has become very important. They inform the people about the happenings in the environment and raise awareness about those issues. Renewable energy, biodiversity, sustainability are some of the topics which are very important in today’s times and environment journalists raise awareness about these issues.

Environment photographer

The role of an environment photographer is to capture pictures of the environment for research, monitoring or artistic purposes. The photograph will send a more poignant message to the viewers than any written words could do. With the help of these pictures, one can convey the status of the environment via your art.

Conservation hydrologist

The role of a conservation hydrologist is to throw light on the decisions of the humans and help them to move from dehydration to a rehydration model. They also have the job to study the movement of water across the crust of Earth. They study how water affects the environment of a place and how climatic changes in that particular place are affecting the quantity and quality of water.

Lecturer

With environmental studies introduced at school, college and university levels, there is a growing demand for teachers who can teach environmental science. So if you have completed your studies in this field, you can opt to teach in school as a teacher or as a lecturer in colleges and universities. 

Wildlife film-maker

A wildlife film-maker is responsible for making documentaries, short films on environment showcasing any changes happening in the environment due to human intervention. With the help of their works, they can raise awareness among the people.

Research and Development

There is a huge awareness among the public about the environment. There is a scope for research and development in this field. Many universities and government bodies give scope to individuals to engage in R&D. The individuals are responsible for conducting research studies; develop models so that environmental pollution can be controlled.

NGOs

After completing your studies, you can get a job in an NGO and do your bit for the protection of the environment. You can disseminate information among the masses, make them informed and bring about changes in policies which have a direct effect on the environment. 

Consultants

These individuals are independent consultants who work with the Central and State Pollution Control Board. Their main job is to offer environment-related advice. 

Salary

If you are a graduate in Environmental Science, you can earn Rs 3to 4 lakhs yearly. For those who have completed their Masters of Ph. D degree, the salary is between Rs 6 to 8 lakhs per year.

The salary package that is offered also depends on the size of the company, location, experience of the individual and other such factors.

To sum up, you can be sure of bagging a good job after you complete your Environmental Science studies.
