Anesthesiology is the branch of medicine that specializes in administrating doses that minimizes pain and keeps the patient in a stable condition both during and after surgical procedures. Anesthesiologists are the physicians who specialize in perioperative care, developing anesthetic plans and help ensure the safety of patients during surgery. They also provide care for the patient to prevent the pain and distress they would experience. This field has undergone a lot of development over the last 30 years. In the US the physicians who perform anesthesia are called anesthesiologists, whereas in the UK they are called anesthetists. There are 3 kinds of anesthesia:

  • Regional anesthesia: It only makes that individual part of the body unconscious that will undergo an operation.
  • Local anesthesia: It is similar to regional anesthesia but it is only applied to a smaller area.
  • General anesthesia: It makes the whole body unconscious.

Admission Process:

To get admission into MD in Anesthesiology, the candidate has to complete the MBBS degree and apply to their respective college they want to study. generally, colleges provide admission into MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree through scores based on entrance exams such as NEET PG. But, there are some colleges such as JIPMER and AIIMS conduct their own entrance exams and provide admission on the basis of that score only. Also, there are few colleges that provide admission through a merit basis or on the basis of marks secured by the candidate in the MBBS degree.
