In India, most parents want their child to become a doctor or an engineer. Because these days there are a lot of engineers who are jobless, so MBBS has gained them first place in terms of an ideal career option. So, getting an MBBS degree from any college opens up the gate of opportunities as believed by student community as well as their parents.
Yes, the decision to pursue medicine is not something to be taken lightly as it’s a long, tough path, not only with a huge financial cost, but also compromises to opportunity cost, work-life balance, and so on.
Also, it is overhyped in a way for the simple reason that the expectations and popular stereotypes of doctors aren’t all that accurate. The glamour of calling yourself a doctor sometimes leads to a large number of students entering the field for the wrong reasons.
Following are few of the reasons whether it is overhyped or not. It is up to you to decide.
You get the Respect and Status
For example, for becoming a physician you need to undergo a far more rigorous training process because they have the greatest responsibility and provide oversight in the healthcare team. So definitely, they deserve the respect and status that comes with being a physician.
But in your day to day life, being a physician doesn’t make you immune to being treated poorly by patients, hospital administrators, and sometimes senior colleagues.
You get Job Security and Good Salary
When it comes to the salary of a physician they can pull in six-figure income easily whereas the chances of someone actually becoming a CEO of a company or a successful startup founder are infinitely smaller.
But in other scenarios, while most of your friends will graduate and start working with a good salary, you will be pursuing 4 years of medical course and taking out loans. So, when you make a good amount of salary by the time you will be far behind your peers who have been working and saving for the past few couple of years.
Conclusion:
Actually, either MBBS is an overhyped career option or is a matter of both Yes and No.
Yes, because even though MBBS doctor is a bachelor of medicine and surgery but he/she is just reduced to primary care physician. It can be said to be overhyped because many people pursue medicine for the wrong reasons.
No, because this is the only profession with a 100% placement guarantee and it is the only profession where there is always vacancy in the medical sector with job security. And also becoming a doctor can be a tremendously rewarding and gratifying experience by serving people.
Basically, being a doctor is overhyped because of the inaccuracies in public perception of what it means to have MBBS as a career, not because it is not a good profession. But it is time now that people should realize that there are also many other career options that have a scope.
