Career Guidance for Dentistry: Eligibility, Jobs

Dental medicine is also known as Dentistry is the field of study of oral disorders in human beings. People in this profession are required to diagnose, treat and indulge in preventing oral disorders and deal with keeping the healthy and proper functioning of gums, teeth, and mouth. The job also involves computer resonance imaging, tissue grafts, implants, and laser surgery. 

Among the field of medical, dentistry offers numerous job opportunities in recent times. Dental disorders have become a common problem in all sections of the population. With advances in science and technology, the profession has been specialized in various ways. The profession is therefore both challenging and lucrative and attracts new aspirants. Nowadays, dentistry involves an oral-facial system of jaw articulation and has become a multi-speciality faculty that deals with complex problems such as cleft palate and lips. 

Different specializations in the field of Dentistry 

Endodontics: Basic medicinal research activity, including natural pulp biology, diagnosis, prevention and management of diseases and pulp infections and root canal procedures. 

Orthodontics: Facial and dental disorders prevention and therapy. 

Prosthodontics: Deals with mouth, teeth and face.

Periodontics: Dealing with gum infections.

Eligibility criteria

For BDS

  • Students are required to score at least 50 per cent in class 12 in subjects like physics, biology and chemistry. Different colleges may have varying requirements for admission. 
  • Admission to all dental programmes offered by Indian medical colleges will be on the basis of the NEET Exam score.

For Diploma 

  • After completing class 10, one can apply for Cosmetic Dentistry, Dental Hygienist, and other such programmes. 
  • One needs to pass class 12 with the minimum required marks to apply for courses like Dental Ceramic Technology. 

For Post-graduate

  • In order to qualify for master's degrees, students must have successfully completed their BDS. 
  • Admission to postgraduate courses is based on the NEET-PG. 

Job prospects

There are excellent job opportunities available in the field of dentistry, such as dental services in hospitals, nursing homes, dental laboratories, and several health facilities. In some of the dental colleges scattered across the world, you can also search for a teaching position.
