Graduate Aptitude Test Engineering (GATE) is one of the most important and prestigious entrance exams for engineering students. It is conducted jointly by Indian Institute of Sciences (IISC) and all the 7 Indian Institue of Technologies (IITs) on a national level. The career choices considering GATE score is vast. GATE score can be used to go for higher studies or join a good organization for a nice job.

GATE exam tests your caliber in engineering and analytics background. You can choose your subjects for the exam from various options like Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science, Information technology, civil, etc. There is a misconception that after GATE, a candidate can only pursue M.Tech, which not true at all. Here we will discuss various opportunities that are available after GATE:

 

Higher Studies

M.Tech

The GATE score is considered to be the first priority to pursue M.Tech in various institutions like IITs and NITs. Those who missed out on studying in IITs during B.Tech can complete that dream through GATE. If you have a good GATE score, you can choose from various options that are available in a particular institution. After choosing a specialization in M.Tech, you are entitled to a monthly stipend and other benefits from the institution for the span of 2 years of the course.

Ph.D.

Candidates who want to pursue a Ph.D. after M.Tech can do it with GATE score. Getting admission for Ph.D. doesn't require only the M.Tech degree, it also requires a B.Tech degree and good GATE score. After the required GATE score, candidates go through a personal interview to get selected. Having a Ph.D. can bring high paying jobs and work in foreign locations. 

PGD in Management

Through GATE score you can go after various courses of Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) in National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE) like:

 

1. Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering (PGDIE)

 

2. Post Graduate Diploma in Manufacturing Management (PGDMM)

 

3. Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management (PGDPM)

 

Basic eligibility for unreserved students for these courses with required GATE score is 60% in Graduation in Engineering/ Technology and 55% for unreserved or SC/ST/PWD.

Abroad studies

It is not entirely true that to study outside INDIA u need to attend only TOEFL and GRE. Some universities like National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) located in Singapore few universities in Germany like RWTH Aachen University and Technische Universität München ask for GATE score to give admission to Indian applicants. 

Job

PSU Sector

After various public-sector units (PSUs) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with IITs for recruitment through GATE several Public Sector Units (PSUs) employs a lot of eligible candidates. Over 200 PSUs such as BHEL, IOCL, ONGC, SAIL, NTPC, BARC, etc.recruit candidates from GATE score. A job in PSUs is one of the best sectors an engineer could get employment in, as these sectors remain up to date in engineering advances.

State Electricity Boards

Electricity boars in different states used to recruit candidates through their individual exams. But these days many State boards are joining hands with IITs to use GATE score for the purpose of recruiting. Few of these State boards are:

1. Odisha Power Generation Corporation Limited (OPGEN)

 

2. Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL)

 

3. West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDC)

 

Research

The area of research in our country is still an untapped territory. It has a lot of potentials as it is explored very little. Through GATE score, one can opt for certain research positions in Research centers like:

1. Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) 

 

2. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)

 

3. Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (DIPSR)

 

4. University College of Science & Technology, Kolkata

 

5. Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR)

 

6.Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD)
