Internetworking technicians set up and manage networks for businesses and organisations. This involves the implementation and updating of hardware and software in the building. Although you will only need an associate degree to get a job, a bachelor's degree also opens up more work prospects.

Internetworking workers set up networks for computer systems to maintain them running properly. They can work for manufacturers supplying network goods and services or for IT departments. Internetworking experts may also work individually, providing particular users with network troubleshooting. These practitioners also hold an associate or a bachelor's degree in computer network systems or similar areas, and may often be accredited by particular technology organisations.

 

Responsibilities

Internetworking workers can also be referred to as computer systems and network engineers or network systems and data processing specialists. According to O*Net Online, data transmission experts and network systems analysts also:

  • Design of network configurations 
  • Network efficiency management

Education qualifications

Undergraduate degrees in computer network engineering, computer information systems or similar subjects are available at many universities and schools. These programmes offer key courses on subjects such as networking and computer system theory, scripting, operating systems and information system security.

Certification services are provided by technology firms including Microsoft and Cisco. Cisco provides the Cisco Accredited Internetworking Expert and Cisco Certified Network Partner licences, as well as other credential services. Microsoft provides two main online certifications: Certified Systems Administrator and Certified Systems Engineer.

Syllabus

  • Data Processing and Analytics: This discipline deals with the design, creation and management of data tools.
  • Embedded systems: when it comes to embedded systems, one is responsible for embedding smart technologies for sensitive and confidential company and industry activities.
  • Management Information Systems (MIS): The creation of data that management can easily use to produce conclusions and reports for the good of the company is MIS. 
  • Networking, Information and Communication Technology: This branch of IT focuses on network technologies and management. 
  • Systems Analysis: Those who chose this niche become professionals in maintaining and managing servers at the workplace. 
  • Cyber, Device and Network Security: Experts in this area are in high demand due to globalisation and the danger of unknown viruses that harm the high-value data of organisations. These specialists specialise in network security and information infrastructure management.
