IIM Ahmedabad Admission Procedure for MBA

IIM Ahmedabad is the most prestigious and one of the finest colleges in India for the students who seek a career in Management. It offers a degree in Post Graduate Programme which is equivalent to the M.B.A Degree and the graduates will be awarded a degree of Master of Business Administration (MBA). This article talks about the admission criteria and selection procedure of IIM Ahmedabad for Domestic Criteria.

 

Who is Eligible for the PGP program?

  • The candidate must hold a bachelor's degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (in case of the candidate belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST)/Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category, this is relaxed to 45%) from any university recognized and approved by Govt.of India.
  • The bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing higher secondary schooling (10+2) or equivalent.
  • A Candidate in the final year of bachelor’s degree or equivalent can also apply.
  • A Valid CAT/GMAT Score

Major Steps to get into the eminent B-school

1. CAT/GMAT examination- A candidate has to appear the national level CAT exam held every year to get into this institution and GMAT exam in case of foreign nationals.

2. Analytical Writing Test(AWT) and Personal Interview(PI)- After the CAT results are out IIM Ahmedabad releases the cutoffs and issues initial call letter to the selected candidates for the further rounds of the admission process. The call letters are issued on the basis of Application Rating scores and not solely on CAT scores.

CAT Cutoff for IIM Ahmedabad

This is the first step towards the battle of getting into this B-School. A candidate has to clear all the minimum cutoffs set by the institution in each section and overall to be eligible for getting shortlisted for the further rounds of selection process i.e AWT and PI. Cutoffs are issued category wise by IIM Ahmedabad. Below is the CAT cutoff of 2019.

How AWT and PI calls are issued?

After clearing the Cutoffs, a student gets a call letter from the institution for the next round i.e AWT and PI on the basis of the Applicant Rating Score(AR Score). This score is derived by giving weightage to various parameters and is used at different stages of the selection process. 

An applicant's AR score is the sum of the rating scores based on their percentage of marks obtained in the 10th standard, the 12th standard (depending upon the stream, viz., ‘Science', ‘Commerce' and ‘Arts & Humanities'), the bachelor's degree program (depending upon the discipline) and work experience respectively.

For Degree in (All Engineering, Technology, and Architecture related Areas): Including BARCH, BE, BIT, BINFTECH, BS (ENG)/ BSC (ENG), BTECH and integrated MTECH degrees (Excluding all degrees in Accessories Design/Apparel Production/Design/Fashion Communication/Fashion Design/Fashion Technology/Interior Design/Knit Wear Design/Leather Design/Jewelry Design/Footwear Design, and BS/BSC degrees in Information Technology) and  (Science and Agriculture related Areas, other than Medicine and Surgery): Including all BS/BSC and integrated MS/MSC (excluding degrees in Economics, Fashion Design, Journalism, and Leather Design). Also including degrees in dentistry, paramedical, veterinary degrees).

Note: Scores in all subjects that appear in their marks-sheet of 10th and 12th Std. examinations will be considered irrespective of whether the board considers them for calculating the percentage.

The Normalised score is used to screen the applicants in the initial stageNormalised AR score of an applicant is equal to their AR score divided by the average of the top 50 AR scores from the applicants. This score is used to screen the applicants in the initial stage.
 
Final Selection
The candidates will be given a call for the AWT and PI rounds on the basis of Normalised Score Obtained. After this round, a candidate is evaluated on the PI and AWT rounds. The Final Selection will be based on the shortlisting of the candidates done separately for each category (General/SC/ST/NC-OBC/PwD) on the basis of their ‘Final Composite Score's (FCS).
 
The FCS of a candidate who appears in AWT & PI will be computed as follows
 
FCS = PIF * Normalised PI Score + AWTF * Normalised AWT Score + CATF_FCS * Normalised CAT Score + ARF_FCS * AR
 
Personal Interview Multiplication Factor (PIF) = 0.50
AWT Multiplication Factor (AWTF) = 0.10
CAT Score Multiplication Factor for Final Composite Score (CATF_FCS) = 0.25
Application Rating Multiplication Factor for Final Composite Score (ARF_FCS) = 0.15
 
Weightage:
PI  50
AWT 10
Final Composite Score 40
 

After the AWT & PI round, admission offers are made to successful candidates. The final selection is based on a diverse set of attributes which includes performance in CAT, performance in AWT & PI, academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular achievements, work experience, etc. Admission offer letter would be sent to all successful candidates. Candidates, who are offered admission, need to confirm their acceptance by completing all the required formalities by the mentioned date.
