NIRF Ranking: Check the List of Top Medical Colleges

National Institute Ranking Framework, (NIRF) Rankings for Medical colleges have been announced on 11th June 2020 through a Live webinar by the HRD Ministry. This is the Fifth edition of NIRF Ranking 2020. The ranking was conducted among 563 Government and Private Medical Colleges. The survey ranking has been released for various categories such as Overall, University, Management, Engineering, etc.

The HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said, "Ministry of HRD has taken this important initiative of creating a National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), which is being used for past five years for ranking of institutions of higher education in different categories and domains of knowledge and it is indeed a source of encouragement for all of us." 

The ranking survey was conducted on the basis of certain criteria. These criteria are mentioned below:

  1. Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR)
  2. Research and Professional Practice (RP)
  3. Graduation Outcomes (GO)
  4. Outreach and Inclusivity (OI)
  5. Peer Perception

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, (AIIMS) New Delhi:

Tops in the ranking and was awarded as the Top Medical College. AIIMS Delhi has been awarded as Rank 1 for the third consecutive time i.e. 2018, 2019, 2020 (in a row). AIIMS New Delhi is very well known for its medical research activities and achievements. The Institute was started with the objective to develop different teaching patterns in the UG and PG medical education in all its streams so as to establish a high standard of Medical Education in India. 

Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER)

Secures the second position among the 40 Top Medical colleges. It has scored 80.6 as per the Research and Professional Practices and Teachings, Learning & Resources material availability, and Outreach and Inclusivity. It is also very well known for its Research achievements in Robotic-Assisted Surgery, Renal Transplant Surgery, etc. PGIMER is being awarded the second position consecutively for the third time in a row.

Christian Medical College

Has the third position in the NIRF Ranking among all other medical colleges in India.CMC is the first college to start the College of Nursing in 1946. It is well known for its medical achievements like the successful Reconstructive Operation for Leprosy in1948, Operating the first Open Heart Surgery in India in1961, Carrying out the first Kidney Transplant in India in 1971, etc. In 2015 World Health Organisation (WHO) awarded the Public Health Champion Award. The college offers MBBS, 57 post-graduate diploma and degree medical courses (MS, MD, DM, MCh, Ph.D.), 44 Allied Health Science courses, 52 Fellowship courses, and 14 diploma courses in nursing and many other fields.

National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences

Has a 150 years old history of existence. The NIRF Ranking ranks this college as 4th among the Top 10 Medical colleges. National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences is one of the first mental health care established in 1847. It is well-equipped with updated laboratory facilities and the Medical Library. It has the oldest record of performing the first successful leucotomy operation in the country on 21st September 1942. This institute started the first postgraduate courses, Diploma in Psychological Medicine (DPM) and Diploma in Medical psychology (DMP) in 1955. The history of able teaching facilities, complete learning system & abundant availability resources are the top reasons awarded. 

Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences

Secured the 5th rank among the Top 40 Medical colleges present in India. Each year Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences releases many research papers related to the medical field. Here all the departments are strictly engaged in teaching, training, research activities, and patient care. The institute has a large computer network with more than 500 computers that are spread all over the hospital and its departments. This Institute offers DM, MCh, MD, Ph.D., post-doctoral certificate and post-doctoral fellowships courses, and senior residency in numerous specialties.

Banaras Hindu University

Rewarded with 6th rank because of its Outreach and Inclusivity and Research-related activities in the medical field. In 2018 it was ranked 7th, in two years the institute gained one rank which is a great achievement. It has 12 research centers working in several fields like DBT, Nanoscience, and Technology, Advanced Immunodiagnostic, etc. It's very well known for its health services.  

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham

It is a private university (deemed) which has been awarded rank 7 among other top colleges. Previously in 2019, It was ranked 13 in the overall segment by the NIRF in and 4th in the University segment. This institute provides many degrees such as undergraduate, postgraduate, dual degree, integrated-degree, doctoral, and certification programs in a specialization such as Engineering, Medicine, Business, Mass Communication, Biotechnology, Arts & Sciences, and Social Work. The QS World University Rankings 2019 has ranked this college 234 in Asia.

Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research

Has been graded 8th rank according to NIRF Ranking 2020. JIPMER offers various Undergraduate courses such as MBBS, BSc (Medical Laboratory Technology),  BMR (Bachelor of Medical Record Science), BSc( Allied Medical Sciences- Cardiac Lab Technology/Dialysis/Neuro/OT), and BSc (Nursing). JIPMER and Harvard School of Public Health have tied up to exchange faculty, research, educational tools, and data on public health. This partnership is the largest MoU between the Indian ministry of health and family welfare and the American medical school. Recently, JIPMER has started working on the offsite hospital present in Karaikal.

Kasturba Medical College

This medical college started in 1969 with the pre-clinical section at Manipal. it became a full-fledged independent college. KMC, being the first self-financing medical college in India, it was ranked 12 among all medical colleges of India in 2018 by India Today, 9th by The Week in 2017, and 10th by Outlook India. It has a pathology and anatomy museum. The anatomy section helps students understand the concept very easily through its accurate display of the human body and organs. The museum of pathology displays diseased body parts and organs showcasing lifestyle-related diseases that display specimens of diseases occurring in humans.

King George`s Medical University

This medical school, hospital, and university is located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is ranked 10th among all medical universities according to the NIRF 2020 Ranking. In 2017, among all medical colleges in India, this University was ranked 5th by Outlook India and 13th by The Week. It provides MBBS with a one-year internship and BDS Programs. It is indulged in many research-related activities and has an excellent record of placement.

These rankings will guide the students for selecting the desirable colleges based on a certain set of criteria and help the Colleges to increase their performance. This can also act as a guideline for the College to improve its performance in the field of research and focus on the areas that are in need of development. Pokhriyal said  "It is indeed befitting that besides Overall ranking, category-specific rankings are done for colleges and universities and subject-specific rankings are done for Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Architecture, Law, and Medicine. A new subject domain, i.e. “Dental” is introduced from 2020 onwards". The Ranking of Institutions at the national level introduces competitiveness among all the institutions to improve their performance and excel in the international ranking.
