Mining Engineers: Job prospects,Top Colleges and Recruiters

Mining engineering is a branch of engineering which deals with extraction and mining of metals and resources from under the earth’s surface. The process includes mining digging, extracting, processing, testing and developing of machines or techniques related to mining and supervising the mining of underground materials. It also includes safety process, checking of the equipment used, ensuring and checking air quality, etc. These people also make sure that the process is completely environment-friendly.
Mining Engineering is the Engineering discipline which applies technology and science to extract the minerals from the earth. Mining engineering is also associated with other disciplines like mineral processing, geology, metallurgy, and geotechnical engineering and surveying and exploration.  The Mining Engineer manages the phases of mining operations which are from the exploration and discovery of mineral and the resource to the feasibility study, mine design and development of the plans, productions and the operations to the resp[ective mine closure.

Admission Process

Most of the institutes usually have the 'direct admission' or 'merit-based admission' process. Interested aspirants need to approach the institute and fill up the admission form. Seats will be allocated to the deserving students basing on the marks scored by them in 10th boards, usually considering the Mathematics and Science subjects.
Aspiring candidates can apply for JEE Main for the admission in undergraduate engineering courses. For the admission in IITs or NITs, it is must for the candidate to qualify JEE Advanced exams. For the Master's Courses in engineering, students need to clear the GATE examination which is conducted once in a year.

Required Education
Mining engineers need at least a bachelor's degree to search for a job and many research positions require a master's degree or doctorate. Some of the courses which the student need to cover are a mining operation, geology, mine design, metallurgy, and environmental reclamation. Geology, physics, chemistry, environmental studies, mathematics, and economics are the fundamentals of mining engineering studies. Coursework can include rock fragmentation and mechanics, mine design, mine ventilation, surveying, mineral processing, and resource law. Few subjects which fall into this are:
  • Ventilation
  • Rock Mechanics
  • Mine Planning
  • Materials Handling
  • Drilling and Blasting
  • Minerals Processing
  • Ore Reserve Analysis
  • Industrial Management
  • Mine Cost Engineering
  • Mine Health and Safety
  • Environmental Aspects of Mining
  • Design of Engineering Structures
