Mathematics and Computing Engineering; colleges, entrances, syllabus, jobs.

Mathematics and Computing Engineering is all about combining the abstract ideas, theorems, and hypotheses with the practicality of computing through concrete and basic concepts. The course can however be a let down for those who see it as an alternative for Computer Science, as the curriculum has a substantially larger amount of Math than Computer.

The mathematics in this branch covers topics like Algebra, Calculus, Probability and Discrete Mathematics, which is an area of mathematics that finds a direct application in Computer Science as the basic principle behind it is applied to converting Analog (continuous) data to Digital (two discrete levels).

As for the ‘Computing’ component, courses in this branch deal with subjects like data structures, analysis of algorithms and computer architecture. The branch also offers a large number of sought after elective courses like Digital Image Processing and Mathematical Logic.

Admission Process

The general admission process in most of the institutes is on the basis of entrance tests. There are several state level and national level engineering entrance exams. Although some institutes provide direct admission based on merit in qualifying exam. Most of the reputed institutes have made the entrance exam mandatory for admission procedure. There are several entrance exams held in India at National and State level. Some private institutes like SRM University, BITS Pilani, VIT University, etc. conduct their separate entrance test.

 FAQ's

Q: What is the basic eligibility for studying Mathematics and Computing Engineering?

A: 10+2 with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) is the basic requirement to take admission in any BE/B.Tech. program. Percentage required in qualifying exam is 50% for most of the engineering institutes. Apart from this, there are certain other criteria on which various institutes provide admission. Every university or institute comes up with an annual entrance test that needs to be cleared for any further formality.

Q: Can I continue doing research after completing post graduation in Mathematics and Computing Engineering?

A: Where research is concerned, most tend to opt for higher studies in the field of Computer Science, rather than Applied Mathematics. If you want to pursue an MS from a foreign university, then you should prefer the 4 year course as doing an MS after spending an extra year for an MTech can be discouraging for some people.

Q: What are the further study options after B.Tech in Mathematics and Computing Engineering?

A:The curriculum offers a perfect blend of mathematics and computing, which can be put to use in many research projects. Some of them include Data Mining, Big Data (Hadoop and the map reduce framework), Stochastic Processes, Machine Learning and Recommender Systems, Computer Graphics, etc. The MnC programme at the IITs also gives you a chance to branch out either into Applied Mathematics research or into Computer Science.

Q: What is the most common job profiles in this field?

A: The most common job profiles in this field are:

  • Financial Analyst
  • Assistant Meteorologist
  • Assistant Meteorologist
  • Computational Engineer
  • Computer Scientist
  • Telecommunications Analyst
