IIT Ropar: Through out the period of COVID-19 or Corona Epidemic it has been seen that the there has been a huge amount of shortfall in the supply of Contamination proof masks. In this crucial period of time, in India a Team of Researchers of IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Ropar have come with a solution for the deficiency in availbility of masks which is still continuing to be a major problem in India .
The Team of IIT Ropar have developed an indigenous technique by which the General public can make N95 standard equivalent masks at home. They have tested the new mask with smoke and water and it proved itself to be a good match in standards as compared to that of N95 Masks.
The Researchers have been working on providing solutions to the various problems that have occurred during the COVID-19 Global outbreak. They have had many brain storming sessions since 22nd of March 2020 to developed new technical solutions to tackle the problems that are created or can be created due to the Corona virus infection. The few names of the faculty members who took part in the Research are mentioned below:
- Dr Dhiraj Mahajan Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Department
- S. Manigandan Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Department
Methodology:
- A small quantity of solid candle or natural wax is heated mildly until liquefied.
- Adesired or whole part of the handkerchief is soaked in liquiid wax and left it dried for 30 min
- Drying of wax-coated handkerchief using direct sunlight for 2-3 Hours is recommened to get rid of the wax odour/smell.

Assistant Professor S. Manigandan said, "There was a shortage of protective gear for the general public due to Coronavirus pandemic. We worked a lot to get a solution by preparing the masks that may be equivalent to N95 masks or at least can prevent the risk for the General Public. Like N95 mask, the homemade mask developed under our technique can prevent smoke and its better on parameters of resisting water. As our homemade masks are not medically certified, we cannot claim that it can prevent all kinds of viruses but we have tested them a numerous times in the last few days. The home made mask prevents smoke and water better than N95 as it is prepared by using a simple wax that is coated on the handkerchief. " He added " We have come out with an idea to use wax coated mask as an immediate the solution to tackle the crisis situation arising due to scarcity of mask."
