This decision was taken due to a huge difference that was seen in the male and female participation in JEE Main engineering entrance which impacts the gender balance in IITs. In the 51st meeting of the IIT Council, held on April 28, 2017, it was decided to increase female enrolment in B.Tech programmes to 20% in 2020-2021 and creating supernumerary or additional seats was suggested to be the only option.
In April 2018 first time the IIT Kharagpur had added 779 seats exclusively for women candidates.
