Global exams like TOEFL and GRE will be taken at home except in mainland China and Iran in view of the COVID-19 situation across the globe, according to the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The tests had been suspended across the globe following coronavirus outbreak.
"At-home solutions will now be worldwide for test takers who have been affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Both TOEFL and GRE will be taken at home till the situation is conducive for tests to be conducted at centres," Srikant Gopal, Executive Director of the TOEFL Program, told PTI.
"Precautions are being taken to ensure that the tests students will take from home meet the highest standards. for validity, reliability and security. These tests employ multiple best-in-class security measures that use both real-time human monitoring and artificial intelligence technology," he added.
TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. Having an international degree in today’s competitive world adds an extra charm to a candidate’s personality. It not only opens up a new horizon but also enhances the person’s employment opportunities. Over the years, it has been observed that there are many people who start catching flights to foreign countries, with the aim of achieving an international degree; be it in Engineering, Medical or Management. But, getting admission in any of the foreign universities is not as easy as it sounds. One has to go through few entrance exams, serving as prerequisites for admission to the foreign universities. TOEFL exam is one of such exams, which is conducted every year to judge the comprehensive understanding of English as a language among those students who wish to pursue higher education in foreign countries. The exam is taken to test the reading, listening, speaking and writing skills of aspiring students. It’s an online exam that is offered 50 times a year. TOEFL exam is conducted online as well as offline mode. However, people generally opt for the Internet-based test. Currently, 8,500 colleges and universities scattered over 130 countries, use the TOEFL exam’s score.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is a standardized test that is accepted for admission to various disciplines at many graduate and business schools across the globe. GRE is conducted in two modes; computer-based and paper-based formats. The duration of this exam is 3 hours 45 minutes. This test is conducted only thrice a year in April, September, and October and is available only in paper-delivered format. In the GRE general test, there are six GRE subject tests that evaluate candidates’ knowledge in their respective fields. The subject tests are conducted for the following areas- Mathematics, Literature (English), Physics and Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, and Biochemistry (Cell and Molecular Biology).
