The Human Resource Department(HRD) Ministry of India has awarded the status of Institute of Eminence(IOE) to 5 public institutions, which are:
- IIT, Madras
- IIT, Kharagpur
- Delhi University
- Banaras Hindu University
- University of Hyderabad
The HRD Ministry took this action on 4th September, Wednesday. This decision was made following a recommendation from the University Grants Commission(UGC) last month. Each of the above mentioned public universities is required to sign a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) with the HRD Ministry to enjoy this status.
Five private institutions in the UGC recommended list are already issued with letters for a grant of IOE status, they are:
- Vellore Institute of Technology
- Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore
- Jamia Hamdard University, New Delhi
- Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Bhubaneswar
- The new greenfield Bharti Institute (yet to be set-up)
These 5 private institutions need their individual state government to act fast, making it easier for them to get IOE status. The Tamil Nadu and West Bengal governments must contribute half of the funds required by Anna University and Jadavpur University. The Haryana and UP Assemblies need to pass legislation to evoke the private university status of OP Jindal University and Shiv Nadar University and get the IOE Deemed University status in place.
These institutions won't undergo UGC inspections and can create their own courses, fee structure, curriculum, and admission procedure. They will be free to self-govern their academic, administrative, and financial fields.
