Upon the National Education Policy, (NEP) many discussions were made with the stakeholders and it came to a conclusion that in each district there should be at least one college that should be converted into Universities in Gujarat. 12 colleges one in each of the district to be identified as universities. The colleges include both technical and non-technical as well as government and grant-in-aid colleges.
The 12 districts that are not having universities are:
- Aravalli
- Bharuch
- Botad
- Chhota Udepur
- Dang
- Devbhoomi Dwarka
- Dahod
- Amreli
- Mahisagar
- Morbi
- Porbandar
- Tapi
Out of these colleges, 9 are granted in aid, three are government and two are women's college
“This is one of the recommendations of the National Education Policy. Apart from the colleges, we are also looking at the capabilities of the district to sustain a university. Though this would be developed over time, the initial process has commenced,” said Principal Secretary, Education, Anju Sharma.
The state education department has categorised the other reforms listed in the NEP 2020 under “immediate action”.
