CAT stands for Common Admission Test. It is a national-level MBA/ PGDM entrance test conducted for admission in 20 IIMs and 1000+ other CAT score accepting B-schools. CAT 2022 exam is most likely to be conducted on November 27, 2022 in 3 slots. A candidate who has completed  graduation in any stream with minimum 50% Scores for General and 45% for the Reserved category is eligible to appear for the CAT exam 2022.

Candidates must declare and maintain a valid and unique email account and a mobile phone number throughout the selection process.

CAT is a computer-based (Online) test. The test scores of a candidate will be calculated on the basis of Quantitative Ability (QA), Reading Comprehension (RC), Data Interpretation (DI), Verbal Ability (VA) and Logical Reasoning (LR). The test is conducted every year by one of the IIMs based on the rotation policy.

CAT 2022 is conducted by IIMs for admission into their popular PGDM/PGP programs. Every year the Exam Schedule is released by the conducting body which students eye on. The registration process will start from August 3, 2022 and will continue till September 23, 2022. It is important to know the CAT 2022 Exam Pattern to have a brief idea of the examination.

The candidates aiming for CAT 2022 must start their preparation accordingly depending on their subject wise strengths and weaknesses. 

CAT 2022 Admit card

The CAT 2022 admit card will be released in the online mode on iimcat.ac.in before the CAT 2022 exams. Candidates can download and print the CAT admit card by entering their login credentials, i.e., CAT login ID and password.

Candidates who register for CAT 2022 examination can download the CAT 2022 admit card from the official website after the end of the CAT 2022 registration process. The dates are yet to be released and hence will be updated accordingly. However, the admit card will not be sent by any other means to the candidates. The CAT 2022 admit card will consist of the name, roll number, date of birth of the individual with the time slot and exam center with the address. Without the  CAT 2022 admit card, no individual will be permitted to enter the exam hall.

CAT 2022 Exam day Guidelines

Below are the exam day guidelines released by the conducting body in the official website of CAT. Admit Card is the most important document on Exam Day. Download Admit Card from CAT 2022 Website and recheck the details mentioned in the CAT 2022 Admit Card
Dos for Candidates:

1. Print the Admit card on an A4-size paper, preferably using a Laser Printer - Admit Card is valid only if the Candidate's photograph and signature images are legibly printed.
2. Make necessary arrangements for travel, food, accommodation (if any), and any other expenses (including those on account of medical emergencies).
3. Before leaving for the Test Centre, Candidates are requested to verify and carry their original ID proof and the printed CAT 2022 Admit card.
4. Use the Google map link embedded in the electronic version of the Admit card to locate the Test Centre. Identify the mode of transport and commute time at least a day before the Exam Day in order to reach the Test Centre on time on the day of the Exam.
5. Ensure to affix the Photograph, as required, in the space provided on the Admit Card before handing over for verification at the Test Centre. Affix the same photograph which was uploaded during the application process.
6. Deposit all personal belongings such as mobile phones, bags, wallets, jackets, jewellery, watch, electronic gadgets, stationery items, etc. at the Test Centre Entrance Gate.
7. Maintain silence and remain in Queue during (a) entry to the Test Centre (b) frisking process (c) document verification and (d) biometric verification and (e) exiting the Test Centre.
8. Cooperate with Test Center staff during document Verification and Frisking.
9. Use the Reference Number printed on the Admit Card, to check the location of Exam Lab from the List displayed on the Notice Board at the Test Centre.
10. At the Console, use the Mouse to select the right Option as an answer for an MCQ and to use the on-screen Keyboard to answer a non-MCQ.
11. Return Writing Pad with all pages intact and Pen post completion of the Exam to the Invigilator.
12. Ask for any help required in the course of the Exam from Test Centre Invigilator present in the Exam Lab.
13. Mandatorily provide your attendance in the Form with signature when asked for in the Exam Lab.
14. After the Exam, handover the duly signed Admit Card to the Invigilator present in the Exam Lab.

Don’ts for the Candidates:

1. Avoid attempting to appear for CAT 2022 Exam more than once. Candidature will be cancelled if a candidate is found to appear for the test multiple times.
2. Do not carry any prohibited items such as electronic gadgets etc. inside the Exam Lab.
3. Do not attempt to cheat or copy answers from others during the Exam.
4. Do not involve yourself in any arguments with other Candidates or Test center staff. Decisions of concerned authority will be treated as final on the test day. 
5. Do not use the keyboard at any point in time; this will lock your computer system.
6. Do not disturb other Candidates.
7. Do not request for a bio-break while inside the Exam Lab unless it is a medical emergency.
8. Do not have friends and relatives accompany you beyond the Test Centre gate.
9. Do not request for change of Test Centre/Exam Lab/Console on the Exam Day.
10. Do not wear any jewellery (or any item(s) containing metal), jackets, and footwear inside the Exam Lab.
11. Do not use Mobile phones, Electronic Gadgets, Watches, Calculators, own Stationery items, Wallets, and/or Goggles.
12. Do not provoke any other Candidate to commit or participate in any form of malpractice.
13. Do not waste Writing pad pages as it is distributed only once per Candidate the during course of the Exam.
14. Do not carry any page from the Writing Pad outside the Exam Lab after the test.

CAT 2022 Document Verification:

After completion of the frisking process, Candidates would be asked to proceed for Document Verification. Candidate’s Admit Card with affixed photograph), and original photo identity proof and other documents (if any) would be checked at this Desk.

After successful Document Verification 

a. Candidates would be allowed to move to their respective Exam Lab.

b. After entering the Test Lab, Candidates would not be allowed to leave the Test Lab before the Exam ends, unless it is a medical emergency.

c. Candidates would be advised to remove their footwear outside the Exam Lab.

Biometric Registration:

Post Document Verification process, Candidates would be asked to proceed for the Biometric Registration

a. During the Registration Process, the Candidate’s left thumb impression and

the photograph would be captured.

b. Candidates would be required to sign the Attendance Sheet.

c. The assigned Invigilator would read out the Instructions before the Exam begins.

Exam Commencement

The Invigilator would inform Candidates to log in to the Console. The candidate would be allowed to use the mouse or on-screen keyboard on their allocated system to log in.

Breaks during the Test

Once the Invigilator has signed-in a Candidate, the Candidate would not be allowed to leave the Test Lab until the end of the Test period. If for any unforeseen requirement, the Candidate would need to step out of the Test Lab, the same would be allowed only with an escort.

After the examinations, the CAT 2022 results will be declared by the conducting authority within a few days on the official website. The candidate will be selected on a merit basis which is based on the CAT 2022 cutoffs decided by various institutions for admission into their programs.

CAT 2022 Syllabus:

Since 2015, the syllabus for the CAT 2022 entrance exam has gone under many changes. Every year, the CAT 2022 syllabus and pattern is updated by CAT experts with a little change in pattern and topics. Before starting your CAT 2022 preparation strategy, you should be aware of the syllabus for the CAT 2022 exam so that you can start your preparation as soon as possible. Below is the detailed syllabus of CAT 2022:

Syllabus for Mathematics or Quantitative Section:

This is one of the challenging sections where students face difficulty. It needs more attention from the candidate as it is more calculation based therefore a good grasp of fundamentals and thorough practice is needed to ace the Quantitative Ability section. 

It contains 22 questions including both MCQs & non-MCQs. 

The syllabus can be divided into Arithmetic, Algebra, Modern maths, Geometry and Number system 

Syllabus for English or Verbal Section:

The verbal ability is divided into verbal and reading comprehension sections. This section contains a total of 24 questions. The questions from Verbal Ability is majorly asked in Non-MCQ based which carries no negative marking. Reading newspapers, articles, editorials religiously will help you sail through this section.

Syllabus for the Reading Comprehension

  6 questions based on each long passage and 3 questions based on each shorter passage. Sometimes the uniform number of 5 questions follow 4 RC passages and 1 RC Passage is followed by 4 questions

1. Current affairs making an impact on Social Life, International Affairs, Govt policies, and Schemes for example Triple Talaq, Clean India Mission, Migration of people from one country to other, Growing intolerance across the Globe,
2. Business & Economic RC Passages for example Global economic changes, economic development at the cost of environment, Impact of Demonetization in India, Wasteful expenditure by Governments
3. RC passages from various English Literature books, from articles authored by great philosophers, thinkers, from various speeches of great personalities like passages from Charles Dickens, Aristotle, Martin Luther King, Mohan Das Karam Chand Gandhi, Churchill among others
4. Passages on Science & Culture including the journey to the Modern world; Fading culture with the advancement of technology
5. Abstract topics and fiction are also included in the Reading Comprehension Syllabus for CAT. 
6. RC Passages on Historical events leading to social changes for example French Revolution, War of Roses, Social changes in Indian History and thoughts shared by  various activists which are very much relevant even today
7. RC Passages from Mythology. These passages try to correlate the Mythological events with the current social structure and answers to the questions on them have to be inferred.

Syllabus for Data Interpretation and Analytical Reasoning Section:

CAT 2022 Exam Pattern:

The exam pattern of CAT 2022 has remained the same over the past few years and is expected to remain unchanged in the year 2022 unless notified.

The exam is conducted in three shifts on the same date:
Slot 1 – 8:30 am to 10:30 am

Slot 2 – 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm

Slot 3 - 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm

Here is the detailed information regarding the exam pattern:

Sectional Timing:

CAT 2022 has a sectional time limit. Candidates will not be allowed to choose any section to start with or switch from one section to another. Each section will have a time limit of 40 minutes however the PwD candidates would be given an extra 20 minutes for each Section. The exam will have to be taken in a chronological manner, which is:

• Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
• Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning 
• Quantitative Aptitude

Some of the points released in the official website of CAT are:

1. For all Candidates, the Medium of the Exam is English

2. Some Questions would be of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) type with Options to select and some would be the non-MCQ type

3. For all MCQ type, a wrong answer would result in -1 Mark. There would be NO Negative Mark for a non-MCQ type question.

4. A virtual keyboard would be displayed on the screen which is to be used for a non MCQ. Use the mouse to operate the virtual keyboard.

5. Usage of external/physical calculator would not be allowed; however, a virtual Calculator on the screen would be available.

The cut off is the minimum mark required to qualify the exam. The cut off of CAT 2022 will be released after the declaration of the CAT results and will be decided by the conducting authorities of CAT 2022 after the CAT 2022 results are released. CAT 2022 Application form:

CAT application form 2022 is most likely to be released from August 3. The registration link for CAT 2022 will be available on  the official website, iimcat.ac.in. The official announcement will be released on August 2022, after which the registration process will begin. Registration form for CAT exam 2022 will only be available in online mode. Students must initially create a CAT 2022 login and thereafter fill in details in the application form of CAT 2022.

• 15% and 7.5% seats are reserved for SC and ST candidates respectively. 27% of seats are reserved for OBC (Other Backward Classes) candidates of “non-creamy” layer (NC-OBC).
• 5% seats are reserved for Persons with Disabilities (PwD).
• A copy of the SC or ST or NC-OBC or PwD certificate(s) will be uploaded at the time of CAT Application registration.

How to Apply for CAT 2022?

Step 1 (Registration)

• Go to www.iimcat.ac.in and click on the ‘Register’ button under the New Candidate Registration header to create your own user profile. The Registration form window will open in your browser.
• Create your own User Profile by completing the registration process and generate the OTP by clicking on to the OTP button. It will redirect to CAPTCHA to fill and submit the OTP number received on your mobile for verification.
• As soon as the submission of your Registration Form, you will receive your User ID on the registered email address from the Administrator with the subject line CAT 2022 Login Details. 

Step 2 (Filing the Application Form and Payment)

• Login to CAT Website.
• Fill Application Form which includes Personal, Communication Address, Academic and Emergency Contact Details, Upload Documents
• Select the Programme and the Interview City for that Programme as per the cities listed from the respective drop-down list.
• The applicant can select any four Test Cities as per his or her preference from the drop-down menu.
• Click on Save and proceed to the Payment section.
• Select the Payment Mode. After selecting, the respective payment gateway will open for you.
• Fees can be paid through Online mode only i.e by Credit card/ Debit card/ Net Banking.
• Payment confirmation will be open. Save the receipt of the transaction as proof.
• After the successful payment, Candidates will receive an email to their registered Mail Id.
• Candidates will take a printout of their application form for further use.

CAT 2022 Counselling:

Screening On the basis of Written Test CAT:

The written test is a duration of 120 minutes and is divided into 3 sections each of 40 minutes. The candidate cannot do sectional jump and has to appear the exam in the following order. CAT 2022 has been following the same trend in the exam pattern for the last few years. Here are the details of the CAT 2022 written examination test:

• Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension consists of a total of 24 questions carrying a total of 72 marks
•  Analytical Reasoning and Data Interpretation consists of a total of 20 questions carrying 60 marks in total 
• Quantitative Aptitude contains 22 questions from varied topics carrying a total of 66 marks

The exam contains both MCQ and non-MCQ type questions. Each correct answer is awarded +3 marks and -1 marks are deducted for each wrong answer. The Non-MCQ type questions carry no negative marking. No marks are awarded or deducted for unanswered questions.

Every Institution sets different parameters for their admission process. If the candidate clears the cut-off set by his/her desired institution in the first round, a call letter is sent by the Institution for the next round i.e the  GD/WAT round. Some of the Management institutes conduct both GD and WAT along with PI while some directly conduct the written test. While Institution like FMS also conduct Extempore followed by PI

Group Discussion(GD)/Written Ability Test(WAT):

After the CAT 2022 exam, the candidate goes through the next phase that is the GD-WAT round. In GD, the candidates are divided into groups of 8-10 each to check their thought process & teamwork. Only 15-45 minutes are given for the GD/WAT round. The candidates will be given topics either from burning issues, static affairs, abstract topic or case studies and are expected to remain aware of such issues that will help both for GD and WAT

GD and WAT topics can basically be of the following types based on the current situation:

• Economics 
• Legal
• Technical 

Personal Interview:

The PI round is one of the most important rounds as it carries maximum weightage after the CAT 2022 score. After the GD round, the candidate can attend the Personal Interview or PI round known as the last round of the process. In this round, the candidate has to face the questions coming from a panel consisting of 2-4 interviewers. The panel may ask questions about yourself, general awareness and details present in your CV.

Factors Affecting Selection Process

The participating institutes and IIMs give weightage to each mentioned factor as per their criteria to arrive at a Composite Score of the candidate. On the basis of this Composite Score, the candidate is offered admission into their B-schools.

Common Admission Process for CAT 2022:

Common Admission Process (CAP) is introduced to organize common counselling sessions for IIMs. The difference between CAP & other selection processes is that CAP doesn't have a GD round.

• All the participating IIMs have to submit their individual short-list to the CAP coordinator for 2022.
• Then the host IIM will prepare a final short-list for CAP 2022.
• Confirmation of the Candidate is needed for common counselling.
• Candidates will appear for the CAP process and attempt WAT and PI.
• The host IIM will send the CAP score to respective IIMs
• All IIM then prepare their final admission list.
• The centres for CAP 2022 will be  Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. For the 1st CAP merit list around 14000 candidates are expected to be selected.

After the results, the candidate will be called for the further rounds of admission and CAT 2022 Counselling process. The candidate can check the top colleges accepting the CAT score and apply accordingly.

The scoring of the CAT is based on 3 patterns:

• Raw CAT mark
• Scaled or normalized mark
• CAT percentile

1. Raw CAT Mark

• CAT  consists of a total of 66 questions:
• Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC) - 24 question
• Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) - 20 question
• Quantitative Ability (QA) - 22 question

The CAT exam consists of both MCQs and Non-MCQs type of question. Each correct answer is awarded by +3 marks and each incorrect answer results in the deduction of -1 mark. So the total mark for the 66 questions is 198. The raw CAT mark is referred to as the total mark score from a total of 198 marks.

2. Scaled or normalized mark 

The raw mark is then converted into scaled or normalized marks. The CAT normalization process ensures fairness and equality in performance comparison across sessions. This process is also used by GATE. Various factors are taken into consideration while converting raw marks into scaled marks like, no. of. candidates appearing in the exam in the given year, the difficulty level of the exam, the slot number the candidate is appearing, etc. This scaled mark is then converted into a percentile.

The formula for obtaining the scaled mark of a candidate is:

S =  (Ar-G)*(A1-G1) / (Am1-G1) + G

where,

S= Scaled Mark

R = Actual or raw marks obtained by the candidate

Ar = average mark obtained of the top 0.1% candidates in both slots

G = Sum of the mean and standard deviation of marks of all candidates in both slots

Am1 = Average mark of top 0.1% candidates in ith slot

G1 = Sum of mean and deviation mark of all the candidates in ith slot

Example:

Total Slots = 2

Let, 

Total test takers = 2,00,000

Candidates in each slot = 1,00,000 (O.1% = 100)

R = 170 out 0f 300

Ar = (195 + 190)/2 = 192, (where 195 and 190 are average mark of top 100 candidates in slot 1 and 2 respectively)

G = 112

Am1 = 190 (let consider 1st slot)

G1 = 110

So Scaled Mark S = (192-112)*(170-110) / (190-110) + 112 = 172

3. CAT 2022 Percentile

The CAT  percentile is referred to as the total percentage of candidates who scored less than or equal to a particular candidate. This means if a candidate scores 99 percentile, then his/her' performance was better than 99% of the total candidate that appeared CAT that particular year. To clear this confusion, the Cat percentile is not referred to the actual mark obtained by the candidate but it refers to the candidate's performance in comparison to the rest of the CAT aspirants.

The scaled score and corresponding percentile depends on the level of difficulty of the exam and the number of test-takers

Answer key

Candidates can check here the CAT 2022 answer key which will be released by the exam conducting body after the conclusion of CAT entrance test. The provisional CAT answer key 2022 with questions paper will be available on the official website. If an applicant wishes to contest the final answer key, they will able to do so by completing a registration form.

If there is any disagreement with relation to Answer Key 2022, a particular student will get a chance to challenge it within the stipulated time limit. When a candidate will raise any objection, the person needs to give documents and the necessary fees. The amount of the fees will depend on the number of questions for which the student has objected. 

For downloading the response sheet of CAT 2022, the students will need to log in using the CAT id and password. The answer key of CAT 2022  will be announced after the declaration of the CAT results 2022.

Eligibility

If you want to apply for CAT 2022, these are some of the eligibility criteria that you need to consider.

• The candidate who wants to sit for CAT 2022 should have finished their graduation or waiting for the results. If a student is selected, then he/she will be allowed to join the course on a provisional basis. This provisional basis enrolment can only be done after the candidate submits a document from the Registrar/Principal of the University stating that a particular student has fulfilled the requirements for getting the degree. 
• The degree needs to be awarded by any University which has either been announced as a University or it has been formed by a Parliamentary act or it is equal to qualification by the MRHD, India.

Q.What is the age limit for CAT exam?
A. Age limitation does not exist in this exam.

Q.I am a General category student and I have received less than 50 per cent of Bachelor’s degree. However, I have scored more than 50 per cent in my Master’s examination. Can I sit for the exam?
A. You cannot apply for CAT 20202 because as per the rules a candidate needs to have scored 50 per cent in their Bachelor's degree. 

Q.How and when is CAT 2022 registration done?
A. The registration process will start from August 3,2022. The last date for registration is September 23, 2022. You can login to www.iimcat.ac.in to complete the admission. 

Q.Do I need to have a personal email address for CAT registration?
A. Yes, all candidates need to have their unique and personal email id for registering for CAT 2022. All information pertaining to CAT 2022 would be sent on this email id.

Q.I have made a few mistakes while registering for CAT 2022. How do I rectify the mistakes?
A. While registering for CAT, you must remember that changes in name of candidate, email address, contact number or birth date are not allowed. However, if you have made some errors in these fields, you need to register once more using an updated mail address. The earlier registration will be deleted and the new one will be given preference. You can, however, make changes in your gender, residential information, education, the city where you want to take the exam and so on. It is better to preview the application form before submission. 

Q.What is the date for CAT exam in 2022? Can I select the city where I want to take the exam?
A. In 2022, The CAT exam will be conducted on November 27th. The exam will be conducted in three sessions on Sunday. Depending on your choice of the city where you want to take the test, the session slot and other details will be given to you. 

Q. Can anyone appear for more than one slot in the exam?
A.No, you cannot as that would considered as a fraudulent activity. 

Q.What are the categories under which I can apply for the exam?
A. The categories under which you can apply for the exam are- General, SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe) and OBC. 

Q.I am pursuing a Bachelor’s course and I am in my final year. With which marks do I fill up my CAT exam form?
A. Students can fill the form by mentioning their last received marks.

Q.How will I get my Admit Card for the exam?
A. The admit card will be available for downloading after successfully completing the application process. After logging in the CAT website, one can use the Unique ID for viewing and printing the card.

Q.How much do I need to pay to sit for CAT exam?
A.For General category- Rs 2200/- and For reserved category- Rs 1100/-

Q.What are the different parts of the CAT exam paper?
A. Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Ability are the three different parts of a CAT exam paper.

Q. Are electronic gadgets like phones or calculators allowed in the exam hall premises?
A.No, individual sitting for CAT exam cannot carry any electronic gadget. There is a provision of a calculator on the screen. One can use it as per their requirements. 

Q. Can you be marked negatively in the exam?
A. There is no negative marking for Non-MCQs. 

Q.How much mark does non-MCQ and MCQ questions carry?
A. All questions are of equal marks.

Q.How is a candidate marked in a CAT exam?
A. Both MCQs and non-MCQs are of three marks each.
