Internal Medicine


Internal medicine physicians, or internists, are specialists who apply scientific knowledge and clinical expertise to the diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate care of adults across the spectrum from health to complex illness. They are usually the doctors to whom most people go first irrespective of the problems they are having, whether it is a problem with their skin, eyes, ears, reproductive organs or nervous system. Internal medicine physicians also provide wellness and disease prevention goals and management of mental health problems to their patients. The term internal medicine has been derived from the German term innere medizin, this term became very popular in late 19th century to describe the physicians who combined the science of the laboratory with the care of patients. In early 20th century many American doctors studied medicine in Germany and brought this medical field to the United States. Thus, the name "internal medicine" was adopted.



Practicing internal medicine develop the art of effective communication and longitudinal relationships with patients. Internal medicine physicians enjoy diversity in their patient population, the variety of opportunities a career in internal medicine provides is unparalleled. Internal medicine physicians have many options to choose from, and most importantly, these choices can evolve as their career matures. Either they can remain a general practitioner or become a specialist through fellowship training.



Internal medicine is the postgraduate level education and can be pursued only after the completion of MBBS. So the steps involved in the process of becoming an internist are as follows-

  • First of all students are required to pass 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects.
  • To take admission in MBBS programme, students are required to appear the entrance test namely NEET
  • Earn MBBS degree from a well-recognized medical institution.
  • Appear the entrance tests like JIPMER PG, AIIMS PG, NEET PG for taking admission in MD/MS course.
  • Choose internal medicine as a specialization in MD/MS.
  • Candidates seeking admission in doctorate level course, are selected on the basis of performance in the qualifying examination and entrance exam. Various Institutions conduct their own entrance test for admission doctoral level courses.



Human values and humanities don’t come with educational degrees. Though these doctors deal with humans at their most crucial stages so they should possess certain qualities like patience, politeness, ability to build harmonious relationship with their patients, strong ethics, service mentality, self-motivation, understanding etc. In addition to these a good doctor should have the ability to deal with young patients( children) with love and the ability to understand their behavior, Good communication skills and keen observation and playful manner around children.
