Nephrology

Nephrology is specialty of medicine concerned with kidney physiology, kidney disease, the treatment of kidney problems and renal replacement therapy. Systemic conditions that affect the kidneys and systemic problems that occur as a result of kidney problems are also studied in nephrology. The kidneys are vital for maintaining normal fluid and electrolyte balance in the body. A nephrologist is a physician who studies and deals with nephrology. Nephrologists deal with kidney disorders including- fluid and electrolyte disorders, acid-base disorders, kidney stones, glomerular diseases, mineral metabolism, acute kidney disease, acute renal failure, chronic kidney diseases, chronic renal failure, end stage renal disease and dialysis.

FUTURE PROSPECTS OF NEPHROLOGY

Kidney being a purifier of blood is one of the most important part of human body, any problem with kidney hampers the working of other vital parts as well. Considering this it has become more important to diagnose the problem related to kidney as early as possible. On the other hand increasing consumption of alcohol, tobacco and consumption of pesticide ridden food products has resulted in the increase of patients suffering from the diseases concerned with kidney creating acute need of aspiring candidates with excellent ability and interest in this area of medication so his makes the job of Nephrologists all the more important and makes them one of the most sorts after physicians.

ELIGIBILITY

Nephrology is the postgraduate level education and can be pursued only after the completion of MBBS. So the steps involved in the process of becoming a Nephrologist are as follows-

  • First of all students are required to pass 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects.
  • To take admission in MBBS programme, students are required to appear the entrance test namely NEET
  • Earn MBBS degree from a well-recognized medical institution.
  • Appear the entrance tests like JIPMER PG, AIIMS PG, NEET PG for taking admission in MD/MS course.
  • Choose Nephrology as a specialization in MD/MS.
  • Candidates seeking admission in doctorate level course, are selected on the basis of performance in the qualifying examination and entrance exam. Various Institutions conduct their own entrance test for admission doctoral level courses.
