Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. It involves treating diseases that affect the production of blood and its components, such as blood cells, hemoglobin, blood proteins, bone marrow, platelets, blood vessels, spleen, and the mechanism of coagulation. Significant diseases related to blood are Malaria, Thalassemia, Leukemia, Clotting disorders, Anemia, Chagas Disease, and Africansleeping sickness. The principle tests carried out by a Hematologist are Blood film, Coagulation tests, Bone marrow aspirate, Complete Blood Count, Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate, Hemoglobin A1c, Sickle Cell Screen and Manual white blood cell differential.

The laboratory work required in the study of blood is frequently performed by a Medical Technologist/ Assistant. Many Hematologists work as Hematologist-Oncologists, who provide medical treatment for all types of cancer. Hematologists provide expert primary and consultative care for patients with a diverse spectrum of malignant blood-related disorders.



  • Treating bleeding disorders such as hemophilia and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura
  • Treating hematological malignancies such as lymphoma and leukemia (cancers)
  • Treating hemoglobinopathies
  • The science of blood transfusion and the work of a blood bank
  • Bone marrow and stem cell transplantation



Hematology is the postgraduate level education and can be pursued only after the completion of MBBS. So the steps involved in this process are as follows-

  • First of all students are required to pass 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects.
  • To take admission in MBBS programme, students are required to appear the entrance test namely NEET
  • Earn MBBS degree from a well-recognized medical institution.
  • Appear the entrance tests like JIPMER PG, AIIMS PG, NEET PG for taking admission in MD/MS course.
  • Choose your desired branch as a specialization in MD/MS.
  • Candidates seeking admission in doctorate level course, are selected on the basis of performance in the qualifying examination and entrance exam. Various Institutions conduct their own entrance test for admission doctoral level courses.
