Gynaecology is the medical practice dealing with the health of the female reproductive systems (vagina, uterus, and ovaries) and the breasts. Gynaecologists are also known as obstetricians. An obstetrician is a medical doctor who has completed very specific education and extensive training in managing pregnancy as well as labour. A gynaecologist is a medical doctor who has taken education and specialized training in female reproductive health, which includes diagnosing and treating disease.

Gynaecology is one of the most demanded careers in the field of medical science. These days it is seen that demand for women gynaecologist is increasing than males because women are more comfortable with the lady gynaecologist as compared to a male gynaecologist. That’s the main reason why this career option rewarding for female candidates. The term Gynecology is derived from the Greek word gyne and logia. The word Gyne means “Woman” and logia means “Study”.


Future prospects of gynaecology


The demand for gynaecologists has increased in last few decades and Gynecology has become one of the highest paying professions. The scope of gynaecology is growing annually as the number of hospitals and clinics are increasing. One can be employed in various sectors such as clinics, hospitals, universities and government agencies or even go for private practice by opening his/her own surgical clinic.  Otherwise one may opt for further research studies in various universities and research centres. This career option is very respectable and lucrative.




Gynaecology is the postgraduate level of education and can be pursued only after the completion of MBBS. So the steps involved in the process of becoming gynaecologists are as follows-


  •  First of all, students are required to pass 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects.
  • To take admission in MBBS programme, students are required to appear the entrance test namely NEET
  • Earn MBBS degree from a well-recognized medical institution.
  • Appear the entrance tests like JIPMER PG, AIIMS PG, NEET PG for taking admission in MD/MS course.
  • Choose gynaecology as a specialization in MD/MS.

Candidates seeking admission in doctorate level course, are selected on the basis of performance in the qualifying examination and entrance exam. Various Institutions conduct their own entrance test for admission doctoral level courses.



  • P.G. Diploma in Gynaecology & Obstetrics (D. G. O.) – 2 years
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Gynaecology & Obstetrics – 3 years
  • Master of Surgery (MS) in Gynaecology & Obstetrics – 3 years

Apart from these courses, the other short-term specialized courses are available in India as well as in abroad. Such courses are-

Gynaecologist must be compassionate and patient in order to establish a harmonious relationship with their patients. They need to have the personal qualities to help calm women and ease their anxiety around pregnancy and childbirth while still providing accurate information about the status and prognosis of a pregnancy or health condition. They must be polite, enthusiastic and should have a pleasant personality. Must have very strong ethics, service mentality, self-motivated and able to make decisions quickly. Gynaecologist must have a good memory and recollection ability and should also possess a strong sense of responsibility as the patient's life depends entirely on him.
